New Level Reached in Kenya Inclusive School Development Project
On October 29, the expert team from Eötvös Loránd University Bárczi Gusztáv Faculty of Special Needs Education and the ADRA Hungary Foundation arrived in Migori, Kenya, to continue the inclusive school development project initiated in 2021 through on-site fieldwork. This time, Bárczi was represented by Dr. Andrea Perlusz, Vice Dean, and project leader, Dr. Eszter Márkus, Vice Dean, as well as Attila Erdős, Head of the International Office, while ADRA was represented by its director, Zoltán Sitkei.

During the week-long program, the team visited the Migori County Hospital and held discussions with the relevant hospital management regarding the medical examination and healthcare of students with special educational needs that were identified and screened last year. They met with the ophthalmologist responsible for the examination and treatment of visually impaired students, as well as had a brief discussion with the head and staff of the physiotherapy department. An important outcome of the project is that in the second year, the comprehensive rehabilitation of students with special educational needs has started, thanks to the support from the Hungary Helps Agency. Alongside inclusive education, medical diagnostics tailored to individual needs and healthcare rehabilitation have begun.

The trip was a significant event for ELTE as well, as it led to the signing of a cooperation framework agreement between ELTE and the local Rongo University, initiated and prepared by the Faculty of Special Needs Education. This agreement provides a suitable framework for future collaborations in education, research, and sustainability. During the two-hour professional meeting, there was an intensive dialogue on theoretical and practical views and ideas related to the inclusive education of students with special educational needs, as well as the sharing of concepts regarding the training and further education of teachers with special needs education knowledge, and exploration of collaborations extending to other scientific fields.

The majority of the professional programs and tasks this year were implemented through fieldwork in local schools. The support provided by Hungary Helps enabled the team to deliver and install water purification equipment in all five partner schools. The primary goal of installing these devices is to ensure a regular supply of clean water for students to wash their hands, eyes, noses, and ears, thereby preventing infections that could lead to long-term vision or hearing impairment. In addition to demonstrating the operation of the equipment, significant emphasis was placed on coordinating the development of hygienic protocols. The execution of the process will be supervised by a healthcare-trained nurse during regular visits to the schools.

Each school also received a package of books to aid teachers in supporting the education and development of students of different age groups. A power bank featuring the ELTE Bárczi Gusztáv Faculty of Special Needs Education logo was also a great success.

During discussions with students with special educational needs and their parents, it became apparent that, initially, they were not entirely confident that the children would receive personalized medical and rehabilitation assistance. However, with the support of the project, they can now regularly take them to various healthcare institutions.

As part of the school visits, led by Dr. Andrea Perlusz, discussions were held with Kenyan teachers who will be visiting Hungary from December 2 to 10, 2023, for training and professional development. The selected teachers were given a methodological project task for supporting students with special educational needs, and they are expected to present their plans during a workshop planned for the Budapest visit. The plan is then to be tested and implemented between January and April of the following year. The visit of Kenyan teachers to Hungary will be another important step towards effective and inclusive education for all.
